Petrol Price Comparison by Country

At the time of writing there is little difference in fuel prices between England Wales and Northern Ireand, however Scotland does appear to have consistantly cheaper fuel on average, up to 1pence per litre in the case of Unleaded.

This cheaper fuel is probably because most of the fuel refinaries are in Scotland or the North of England, thus reducing the overall transport costs to the petrol stations in this area. It seems that this price saving is being passed onto the consumer. Alternatively it could just be down to the general price of living being lower in Scotland, wages and property rental are both lower and so the running costs of the fuel stations will in turn be lower.

Wales is currently showing the highest fuel prices for Unleaded, Diesel and LPG. This is probably due to the large rural areas of Wales pulling the prices up whilst the relatively small towns and cities (compared to Scotland and England) are not providing such a balance to the price of petrol.

There are of course exceptions with large regional difference in the different countries themselves. For example the Scottish Islands have the highest fuel prices in the country, often 5-10p per litre higher than main land UK, again this is down to transport costs.

Northern Ireland is showing slightly cheaper LPG prices than the rest of the UK, this may just be due to the sample size being quite low.
