Unleaded Petrol Prices

The current average price for Unleaded Petrol is 122.7 p/litre . This is based on the average price of Unleaded sold around the UK over the last 7 days.

Why is petrol becoming so expensive?

Fuel prices are increasing for one main reason - OIL. Pretty much every day oil hits a new high and you cant get around the fact that oil is needed to make unleaded petrol! Infact in European refinaries use a single barrel of oil to produce around 80 litres of unleaded petrol, but they do only use half the oil to make petrol, the rest goes elsewhere (Jet fuel, Gas, Heating Oil etc). Or put another way the raw cost of the oil when oil is at $135 a barrel is 42p/litre. Add on to that 50p tax, 16p VAT, another in 9p distribution and you can see why unleaded is so high at the moment!

But what happens if Oil hits $200 a barrel? Those core costs will go up another 20p and you can bet that the price at the pump will too, leaving us with unleaded selling at maybe £1.45 a litre, by the time VAT has been added and a good dollop of profiteering you can bet that it will be £1.50 a litre!.

And if Oil goes up to $500 a barrel? Well, ignoring the probably wars that will erupt our unleaded fuel will almost double in price to around £2.30 a litre. Scary stuff!

What is unleaded fuel?

Unleaded fuel was born out of the health concerns associated with leaded petrol. The lead in fuel was used as an anti-knock agent that prevented the engine from misfiring. Instead of the lead the fuel contains a number of hydrocarbons and alkenes to increase its octane rating. These compounds also have health concerns and are sometimes linked to causes of cancer. The use of 'green' unleaded fuel is somewhat missleading also as it is still a heavy polluter, however the use of catalytic converters has drastically decreased the low level 'smog' seen in a number of urban areas.
