Stornoway Petrol Prices

Stornoway has to be THE most expensive place to buy petrol in the UK. Other places like the Isle of Skye, the Shetland Isles and the Orkney Isles try(!) to get close, but none can seem to beat Stornoway for the title of King of Fuel Prices. Stornoway can be be up to 10p more expensive for Diesel and around 8p more expensive than Unleaded on occasion. The prices do not seem to be that closely related to mainland fuel prices, in that they often jump up 5p a time and then stay stable for a couple of weeks.

Transport costs are often cited as the reason for high prices in Stornoway. This doesnt make a huge amount of sense as it should only cost around 1-2p to ship the stuff over from the mainland. The garages themselves undoubtably have higher operating costs with a much lower daily turnover of fuel, but that still can't possibly explain the high prices. Perhaps the Oil companys just slap a premium on the fuel they sell to the foreourts because it is an Island and they can get away with it?

The people of Stornoway are lovely as well, we often have a chat to one of the local garages and get all the gossip! By far the nicest people we have spoken to in our fuel surveys.

Iain quotes us "A cartel nothing more nothing less. Independent garages what a joke, all are supplied by one distributor that controls how much they can steal of the island residents. Fuel is delivered to the island by sea which is recognised as the cheapest way to deliver it, yet despite this we have historically always paid a kings ransom for  the ability to travel around the island. It’s a disgrace and high time the Scottish Ministers stepped in to break this cartel."

John from Stornoway says "I have been chatting to the local garages the last few days and have been told the fuel is going up an extra 2p from next week, which will put fuel up to about £1.43 or £1.44.  Heating oil is around the 75p plus at the moment, looks like the islanders will be going back to burning the peat's again very soon "

"We have had some price submissions from Stornaway again where Diesel is 138.9p a litre. About 10p-15p more than the mainland, which is a bit confusing seeing as transport costs to the island are estimated to be only a couple of pence per litre of fuel. Sadly it seems (having spoken to the garages) that the oil retailers sell the fuel to them at these high prices. "

"This is one of the most expensive places to buy petrol, with all the stations seeming to offer unleaded at 119.9p/litre and Diesel at 131.9p/litre. There are a few BP garages there and some independently owned ones. As I said, all are about the same price."
